ALLUSIONS OF HOME

Paris In Plantsville is proud to host Stanwyck Cromwell's impressive solo show Sept 8th-29th.

We'll be hosting an opening reception September 8th from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

About the artist:
Stanwyck E. Cromwell was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and is a second-generation artist. He inherited his artistic gift from both of his parents. In addition, Cromwell credits much of his growth to his cousin and mentor, Maurice C. Jacobs, a noted Guyanese artist, who nurtured him, and was resourceful in laying the foundation for his artistic development. Cromwell graduated from the former British Guiana Educational Trust High School, with high honors in art and other foreign languages, and was employed at Guyana Lithographic Company, as a graphic artist. During his time of employment at that company, he met and worked alongside well-known Guyanese artist Angold Thompson.

In 1970, he migrated to the United States of America, in pursuit of an art career, and has lived and worked in Bloomfield, Connecticut, for the past thirty-seven years. Cromwell earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Applied Arts, from Charter Oak State College and also a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Hartford. His memories of Guyana are rich and abundant, but the most striking are the physical and aesthetic differences between the Caribbean and the United States of America as they pertain to art. Such artists as Cuban painter Wifredo Lam, African American artist, Loïs Mailou Jones and Surrealist painter, Salvador Dali, influenced some of his earlier works. His current work is two-fold in composition and is a fusion of his earlier and new works. Cromwell refers to his current works as his Transitional Series, because they are hybrids of both old and new ideas, intersecting at cultural crossroads.

Saturated colors, patterns and textures show themselves in his collages, sculptures, paintings, and drawings. The movement and vibrancy of his colors are like an aesthetic chess game, where one movement affects the other. Cromwell uses a combination of figurative, abstract, and surrealistic art forms, in addition with symbols and metaphors. The most frequently used, is the black-eye-pea, which he associates with his culinary Guyanese heritage. In other cases, Cromwell associates the black-eyed pea with the racial make up of the United States, as it pertains to majority and minority. Other symbols include seashells, fish-like faces and rippled water-like patterns, which are symbolic of the ocean. In addition he uses multiple overlays, to created depth and imaginary mindscapes. His work is very energetic and commands the attention of the viewer.

Put That Record On! - David Bowie's "Outside"

Every other Sunday, resident artist Josh Blumenthal and music guru Nick Foreman will be hosting music listening parties in the 'Elmwood Room' at Paris In Plantsville Art Gallery.

The Concept:

We'll put on a record (CD, Tape, Vinyl, 8-Track, etc.), listen to it in it's entirety and then discuss both the record and the artist. There will be refreshments, further discussion, and music from the featured artist's catalog.

[There will be alcoholic beverages and food available, however we will NOT serve them until after the listening/discussion. And please no outside alcohol.]

The Album:

David Bowie - 1. Outside 1995 (Arista/BMG)

From Wiki -

Outside is a concept album first released 26 September 1995 by David Bowie on Virgin Records, and this "risky" but successful album was Bowie's "highly anticipated" reunion with Brian Eno, whom Bowie had worked with most famously on his Berlin Trilogy. Subtitled "the Ritual Art-Murder of Baby Grace Blue: A non-linear Gothic Drama Hyper-Cycle," Outside centers around the characters of a dystopian world on the eve of the 21st century. The album put Bowie back into the mainstream scene of rock music with its singles "The Hearts Filthy Lesson", "Strangers When We Meet", and "Hallo Spaceboy" (notably remixed by the Pet Shop Boys).
The liner notes feature a short story by Bowie, the Diary of Nathan Adler, which outlines a somewhat dystopian version of the year 1999 in which the government, through its arts commission, had created a new bureau to investigate the phenomenon of Art Crime. In this future, murder and mutilation of bodies had become a new underground art craze. The main character, Nathan Adler, was in the business of deciding what of this was legally acceptable as art and what was, in a word, trash. The album is filled with references to characters and their lives as he investigates the complicated events leading up to the murder of a fourteen-year-old girl. One is meant to assume that Bowie's character, Nathan Adler, works for the British government due to several references to the cities of London and Oxford, but in the liner notes these are revealed to be, at least in some cases, London, Ontario and Oxford, New Jersey, indicating that the entire story may take place in North America—or, indeed, that the distinction between the two places has become blurred and indistinguishable.

Film Screening - THE CHOICE

Continuing our film series is "The Choice".
Each month in 2012 Paris In Plantsville will be showcasing an independently made film (or film shorts) with a connection to the local film community. This month's film stars West Hartford native Tim Burke. Mr. Burke will also be joining us for the screening and a Q&A session to follow.

Doors open at 7:00 PM, with the film starting at 8:00 PM. As with all our screenings it is a free event, but donations to the gallery are appreciated. The donations keep events like this happening! We hope you join us 5/18/12!

Synopsis:
Vera is a proprietor of a trendy French restaurant and Jazz club in Chicago. Late one evening, just before closing, Vera confronts a customer who refuses to pay the bill. He claims his name is Paul and that her husband, Tim, owes him a large sum of money. After Vera explains that Tim died a year ago in a car accident, Paul, seemingly crushed, drinks heavily and then abruptly leaves. After closing the restaurant Vera drives by a bus stop when she sees the police lifting drunken Paul from a bench. Feeling sorry and guilty at the same time, Vera rescues Paul from the police. After unsuccessfully trying to find him a motel, Vera is forced to take unconscious Paul to her own house where, in the garage, she leaves him sleeping in the car. The next morning, hung-over Paul and Vera find themselves in an awkward situation attempting to better know each other. Vera questions him about her late husband Tim’s past, but Paul’s answers are vague and cryptic. Following an uneasy breakfast, Paul asks Vera to take him to the cemetery to visit his friend’s grave. At the cemetery, their conflict sharpens and a game of cat and mouse ensues culminating in a physical fight, and then reconciliation. Back at her house, Vera discovers a certain attraction to Paul and invites him for dinner at her restaurant. At the restaurant Paul leads Vera back in time where she confronts the mystery of her husband’s death. But, for Vera, a suspicion lurks: is Paul’s story true or is it just a great performance by a sinister con-artist?

Pinxit! and The Works of Cathy Michanczyk - Opening this Saturday 4/14

PINIXT! And THE WORKS OF CATHY MICHANCZYK

Paris in Plantsville Gallery and Studio is pleased to announce the opening of "Pinxit: New Works by Sean Michanczyk & Eric Stegmaier", and "The Works of Cathy Michanczyk"on view from April 14 to May 1, 2012.

About the Artists:

Sean Michanczyk is a 2008 graduate of the Hartford Art School ( BFA illustration ). His work pays homage to old masters while keeping a contemporary trompe l’oeil edge. His tightly rendered paintings and keen sense of balance create harmonious story telling through symbolism. “ What it is, isn’t always what it is”.

Sean is the owner and founder of Paris In Plantsville Gallery & Studio. He and his Great Dane aptly named Paris reside in Southington, CT

Eric Stegmaier is a 2002 graduate of the Hartford Art School (BFA illustration) and a 2007 graduate of Sacred Heart University (MA religious studies). His work harmonizes tightly rendered and loosely gestural strokes, allowing him to direct the viewer’s eye not only through compositional placement, but also by selective detail.

Eric is an artist in residence at Paris in Plantsville and is the Senior Conservation Assistant in the Paintings Department at the Yale Center for British Art. He and his wife Heather currently reside in Southington, CT.

Cathy Michanczyk is a Southington Native, currently living in Plantsville.  Her works are a mix of still life, landscapes, and wonderful portraits of cats in oils, acrylics, and pencil.  Cathy has been on the Connecticut art scene since the early 1970's and has exhibited all over the state. We're proud to have Cathy in April to kick off our new gallery space as we expand Paris In Plantsville.

For more information on the opening please use this link to our Event Page on Facebook.

We look forward to seeing everyone Saturday night!

Elmwood Productions have been bringing the puppet fun for ten years!

"The Complete Steve The Vampire" follows the adventures of Steve who was turned into a vampire as a teenager and although now in his mid-twenties, he just can't catch a break trying to prove himself in the vampire community. Between his overbearing and in denial mother, his indifferent girlfriend, and his unlikely friendship with Dracula, he still manages to keep his head on straight and do his best to avoid being staked by the local vampire slayer.
And all he wants to do is hang out, watch some Star Trek, and enjoy a good glass a blood...

The screening is also part of Paris In Plantsville's monthly film series showcasing independent films made in and connected to the local film community.

And on March 31st we will also be screening our feature film "Josh and Todd: The Story of a Man and is Puppet" to close out the exhibition.
